Spanish Civil War Free Tour

Starting from the Plaza Real, this free tour of the Civil War will take us through the streets of the Gothic Quarter and the Raval to discover how the coup d'état of 1936 and its consequences were experienced in Barcelona.

During the tour, we'll travel back to the 19th century to learn about the background of the Civil War. We'll talk about movements such as anarchism or anticlericalism and analyze how the Catalan bourgeoisie positioned itself before these ideologies.

First, we'll visit the Church of San Agustín. Then, we'll walk through the Boquería market and talk about the confiscations of Mendizábal. Next, we'll head to the statue of the painter Marià Fortuny and remember the Tragic Week of Barcelona and its links with the war in Morocco. All these places will give us a better understanding of Catalan society before the Civil War.

Did you know that the founder of FC Barcelona had to leave Spain after the uprising? What role did the barricades play in the Spanish Civil War? Where was the leader of the Generalitat Lluís Companys captured? You'll find out all the answers and more on this tour!

We'll also tell you about daily life in Barcelona between 1936 and 1939 to try and understand what it was like for the average citizen. As you learn about this sad period in Spain, we'll pass important places such as the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi or the Pont del Bisbe (Bishop's Bridge).

After a 2-hour tour, we'll say goodbye at Sant Felip Neri square.
