Montserrat Half-Day Trip
Explore the spectacular Montserrat, one of Spain’s most important religious sites, and discover why Napoleon, Himmler and other historic figures visited Monserrat Abbey in search of the Holy Grail.
Itinerary
Greet your English-speaking guide at Plaça de Catalunya and sit back on an air-conditioned coach during a one-hour journey to the mountain of Montserrat.
Enjoy the magnificent views as you drive up the mountain: about halfway up, you'll stop at the almost 1000-year-old monastery, Santa Maria de Montserrat. This stunning building is home to beautiful Gothic and Renaissance artwork. One of the Monastery’s highlights is La Moreneta, a twelfth century carving of Our Lady of Montserrat.
The Benedictine abbey has also been a popular pilgrimage site for many centuries: it is believed that the Holy Grail is kept here, which has driven many historic figures to visit this site in quest for the cup. In 1940, Himmler visited the Abbey convinced he would find it, but left empty handed. Your professional guide will tell you about these fascinating anecdotes during your visit.
As well as your guided tour, you'll also have around one hour of free time at Montserrat during which you can see its other sights. You might choose to explore the food stalls near the monastery and sample some artisan cheese and honey, or maybe you'd prefer to visit Montserrat Museum to discover why Montserrat has played such an important role throughout the centuries. You can admire its extraordinary art collection including works of art by Berruguete, Caravaggio, Dalí, Picasso, Luca Giordano, Monet and Degas. The Museum also holds archaeological artefacts from the Middle East.
You’ll be back in central Barcelona around 7pm.
