Discover the heart of the Catalan Modernisme movement in Barcelona on this guided walking tour that will take you on a journey to see Spain's most important modernist symbols. What's more, it's free!
Free Gaudi & Modernism Tour of Barcelona
Meet your guide in Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran in the heart of the Gothic quarter. From here you'll begin your two hour walking tour of the Catalonian capital's greatest examples of Modernist architecture.
The first stop on your free tour will be the Palau de la Música Catalana, a concert hall designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner for the Catalan choral society Orfeó Català. A prime example of Modernist style, the theatre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. From here, you'll stroll over to Els Quatre Gats, the famous cafe inspired by Le Chat Noir in Paris that was the favourite haunt of some of the leading figures of the Modernisme movement.
Your walking tour will also take you to Paseo de Gracia, where you'll have the opportunity to see some of the buildings that best represent Modernist architecture. Contemplate the natural form of Gaudí's Casa Batlló, nickamed the "House of Bones" for its organic, skeletal features, and Casa Milà, also known as La Perdrera or the "Stone Quarry" for its rough-hewn façade. You'll also pass Casa Amatller and Casa Lleó Morera, whose elaborately carved windows and columns will leave you in awe.
Throughout your route round the streets of Eixample, you'll see a number of building façades that are symbolic of this artistic movement. Your tour will end at Casa de les Punxes, a beautiful Neo-Gothic castle on Avinguda Diagonal that was designed by Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
